Our History

Welcome to Northwold Village Hall, a historic venue at the heart of the Northwold community.

The 19th century beginnings

Our story dates back to the 19th century when the hall was originally built as a gathering place for local residents. The first recorded building was in 1821, when a schoolroom was built for Northwold's "National School". A commemorative stone in the floor of the hall tells us that it was "Erected by Public Subscription". There is evidence however that the present hall was commissioned by Caroline Norman in 1875, two years after she had arranged for the Norman School to be built.

We don't know what the first event to be held in the hall was, however it was recorded in a directory of the time as being in use in 1883. In 1890, it was registered as a charitable organisation and remains so to this day. The first written recording of activity was a meeting of the Parish Council in 1894.

The 20th century and beyond

  • Parish Council meetings of course – from 1894 to this day
  • The Northwold WI - founded in 1938 – is probably the second-longest user of the hall.
